ILLINOIS CCL OVERVIEW

Shall-Issue State

Illinois State Police must issue a CCL if qualifications are met. Law enforcement may object if they believe an applicant poses a danger. Cases go before the Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board, whose ruling is final.

License Requirements

Applicants must be 21+. The CCL permits carrying a loaded or unloaded handgun completely or mostly concealed on person or in a vehicle. A 16-hour state-approved training course is required for all new applications.

FOID Card

Illinois requires all residents to hold a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card to possess a firearm or ammunition. A FOID card is a prerequisite for any CCL application.

Reciprocity & Non-Residents

Non-resident licenses available only for Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, Texas & Virginia residents. Illinois does not honor CCW licenses from any other state.
